2008 will be a crucial year for Prince careerwise?

The guy has been attempting to get 'mainstream appeal' again with his last three albums, by performing with Beyonce and during the Superbowl.
But somehow the (commercial) results were so-so: the albums (and singles) didnt seem to be promoted properly, the hardcore fans complained about the albums being to 'lacklustre' and the music journalists just offered a lot of clichés when reviewing those albums.

Next to that his 'original' approach to selling and promoting his 'art' in general, didnt really seem to pay off.
Planet Earth was distributed for free with an english newpaper, which mostly led to complaints about: when its free, its probably not a good album. And i am sure most of this giveaways are no to be buyed for a bargain at second hand record stores.
His fight against fansites 'using' his material, but also popular sites like Youtube and Videogoogle has set a lot of 'bad blood', not only among his hardcore fans, but also with the general public. The general consensus seems to be his a whining old jerk who cares more about the money, then about the music.

To conclude, what in the beginning (the release of Musicology in 2004) felt as an commercial and artistic comeback, in hindsight comes over as a disaster. To me it feels he has made some of the dumbest decisions (marketingwise) he could have done.
Next to that, musicwise those last three albums may sound more disciplined, less self-indulgent on the surface. But in the end they didnt really connect with the hardcore fans as well as the general public, because Prince most of the time sounded he was holding back, and not truelly being himself.

So, i think 2008 could be a crucial year from him. Most of his hardcore fans surely wont appreciate a new album in the vein of the last three ones, i think. And the general public just couldnt give a damn, probably.
I think his career will suffer more if he releases a Rainbow Children part two type of album or some halfbaken Crystall Ball-like boxset.
He can turn things around when he might release some album like Diamonds and Pearls was, containing at least 3 or 4 songs that have written 'hit' all over them.
Another option is a brand new album that is both innovative and daring as well as commercially appealing: a new Purple Rain or Sign of the Times.

What do you think about 2008? what will be the value of this year for Prince career?

  • It's hard being a selfless innovator only to watch your commercialism go unappreciated. And with the record industry still reeling in finding its right bearing when it comes to seling music on the internet, you've got quite a load of headaches to deal with.

My belief is that it's hard being for Prince being Prince, especially when that's who he is. Though in time, I believe he'll find his right bearings.

    • Hope ur faith (and my lack of it at this point) is rewarded,Phil......

      • Come on, you've got to have a little faith sometimes. It's hard surviving in the music biz as it presently is, and you got to look at the present stats, that most record companies tend mostly to put their eggs on newer, younger artists, who know next to nothing about the art of music than they would on guys who practically wrote the book on music innovation like Prince has.
        • Well, absolutely, P... which is why it's all the more confounding that VERY LITTLE i have heard from homie recently has hot me at all like anything after maybe ....like the Gold Album....(???- i'm really bad at chronology with him....)....

That has nothing to do with the record industry, as it does with he just doesnt seem to be hitting 'it' out the box like he used to SO effortlessly......
          • By that, you're referring to back in the 80s, when he had an album out almost every year?

One other thing you've got to understand, is that these days, it's so hard for an artist to be shocking. Most people around would frown their faces if Prince goes into his familiar androgynous, erotic-stimulating vibes that once used to make him famous back in the day.

But all right, let me put it to you: if you were him, how would you go about things?
            • I'm FAR beyond wanting JUST to be shocked by him, Phillip.....

I'm talking about his fun, free-wheeling, experimental side that doesnt seem to be around anymore.....

Before the 80's... AFTER the 80's... there's PLENTY of good stuff to pick..., but not for a long while now, it seems.....

Was listening to 'Vibrator' the other day... and got very sad that nothing with that much, fun, attention grabbing nuances, and creativity will probably ever come from him again.....
How about something that doesnt sound like pre-fabricated funk-for-the-radio-by-the-numbers..... ? How about some collaboration with ANY of the interesting artists out there...??

I am not at ALL sure what i would do if i were him..., I wouldnt even imagine how to tell someone of his talent how to tie his shoes let alone what to do with his music..... smile
I dont know if he CAN find his way back to that deep well of creativity he used to have or be able to tap.....

              • Funny, I was thinking of writing the same thing.

He's just NOT original anymore -- playing it so safe.

And that's the perspective from both a fan & fellow musician... I am simply BORED with this guy.

                • <<He's just NOT original anymore -- playing it so safe.>>

Every artist has his/her own moment of instant fire. After a while, they becoe part of the normalcy and merely make music just for the benefit of still being in the spot light. Isn't that the same argument that most folks ten to think about The Rolling Stones?

The one thing about Prince is that you never know where he's coming from, or how ... not until he strikes, that is.
              • <<Was listening to 'Vibrator' the other day... and got very sad that nothing with that much, fun, attention grabbing nuances, and creativity will probably ever come from him again..... >>

A good thing that I have only listened to only two or three of his albums. That's about less that what you've listened of his music, I'll bet.

                • >> Every artist has his/her own moment of instant fire

Well, that's putting it lightly when talking about Prince's career; his "fire lasted WELL over a decade! His originality & "shock value" was unparalleled in the 80's... EVERYBODY was shocked by 'what' he was doing! And yes, a LOT of it has to do with the "sign of the times" (pun unavoidable)... nowadays, almost nothing is taboo. My critique of his religious rebirth falls along these lines, too. Where else do you go as an Artist when your spiritual guide greatly limits your expression. All the while, your potential new fans have TONS of access to new music/technology, with their tainted innocence ("dirty minds" if you will) and so little respect for the past.

Geeez, I sound like an old fogey ;-)

Yes, but have you noticed one thing about Prince: how he often tends to keep people guessing about his next move. When he pulled that stunt about pulling back his "Black Album" just when it was about to hit the record stores, that took folks unawares; him scrawling 'SLAVE' across his face; his use of a 'symbol' for a name ... there's a hundred more stuff that so fascinates use die-hard Prince fans that makes us keep sticking to him. The fact that right now we're unaware of his next move only adds more intruige to his mystique. Wouldn't you agree?

                • I think PHILLIP meant to say . . .

That's a lot (not ABOUT) less than what you've listened to of his music, I'll bet.

                  -- --

I had to step-in 'cuz dem sounded like fightin' words!!!

                  ;-)

And I'm not quite sure HOW only knowing two of his albums is either

                    a) a good thing (?)

                    b) means someone could really comment on Prince as a recording artist......

I mean not that u have to know 400 songs of his in his 'vault'..., but dont quite know what Phillip meant by stating THAT fact......

i swear- i'm gonna come check u spin someday, D....

                    smile
(maybe i'll get a sympathy spinning of 'Sleep Around'.... !!! lol)
