NEW YORK -- Prince is becoming an author.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member is having a book published worldwide this fall.

Atria Books said that the "photographic essay" will be entitled "21 Nights." The book is billed as "a rare glimpse into the life, lyrics and mystique" of Prince.

Prince's first book is based on his 21 sold-out concerts in as many nights at London's O2 Arena in 2007.

It includes 124 never-before-published images by photographer Randee St. Nicholas.

The book will include a CD of after-hours jams called "Indigo Nights," which is unavailable from any other outlet.

The guy has been attempting to get 'mainstream appeal' again with his last three albums, by performing with Beyonce and during the Superbowl.
But somehow the (commercial) results were so-so: the albums (and singles) didnt seem to be promoted properly, the hardcore fans complained about the albums being to 'lacklustre' and the music journalists just offered a lot of clichés when reviewing those albums.

Next to that his 'original' approach to selling and promoting his 'art' in general, didnt really seem to pay off.
Planet Earth was distributed for free with an english newpaper, which mostly led to complaints about: when its free, its probably not a good album. And i am sure most of this giveaways are no to be buyed for a bargain at second hand record stores.
His fight against fansites 'using' his material, but also popular sites like Youtube and Videogoogle has set a lot of 'bad blood', not only among his hardcore fans, but also with the general public. The general consensus seems to be his a whining old jerk who cares more about the money, then about the music.

To conclude, what in the beginning (the release of Musicology in 2004) felt as an commercial and artistic comeback, in hindsight comes over as a disaster. To me it feels he has made some of the dumbest decisions (marketingwise) he could have done.
Next to that, musicwise those last three albums may sound more disciplined, less self-indulgent on the surface. But in the end they didnt really connect with the hardcore fans as well as the general public, because Prince most of the time sounded he was holding back, and not truelly being himself.

So, i think 2008 could be a crucial year from him. Most of his hardcore fans surely wont appreciate a new album in the vein of the last three ones, i think. And the general public just couldnt give a damn, probably.
I think his career will suffer more if he releases a Rainbow Children part two type of album or some halfbaken Crystall Ball-like boxset.
He can turn things around when he might release some album like Diamonds and Pearls was, containing at least 3 or 4 songs that have written 'hit' all over them.
Another option is a brand new album that is both innovative and daring as well as commercially appealing: a new Purple Rain or Sign of the Times.

What do you think about 2008? what will be the value of this year for Prince career?

Some have come so near in succeeding, while countless others have faded into the distant past. Let's share what we know about those songs/artists that have come so close to creating something as brilliant as what the Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Now Known As Prince would have done.

My first would be D'Angleo. That classic song of his: UNTITLED: How Does It Feel.
New York Sunday Times
July 22, 2007

I’VE got lots of money!” Prince exults in “The One U Wanna C,” a come-on from his new album, “Planet Earth” (Columbia). There’s no reason to disbelieve him. With a sponsorship deal here and an exclusive show there, worldwide television appearances and music given away, Prince has remade himself as a 21st-century pop star. As recording companies bemoan a crumbling market, Prince is demonstrating that charisma and the willingness to go out and perform are still bankable. He doesn’t have to go multiplatinum — he’s multiplatform.

Although Prince declined to be interviewed about “Planet Earth,” he has been highly visible lately. His career is heading into its third decade, and he could have long since become a nostalgia act. Instead he figured out early how to do what he wants in a 21st-century music business, and clearly what he wants is to make more music. Despite his flamboyant wardrobe and his fixation on the color purple, his career choices have been savvy ones, especially for someone so compulsively prolific.

Like most pop stars, he goes on major tours to coincide with album releases, which for Prince are frequent. But he also gets out and performs whenever he chooses. Last year he took over a club in Las Vegas and renamed it 3121, after his 2006 album “3121,” which briefly hit No. 1 and spawned multiple conflicting theories about the significance of the number. He started playing there twice a week for 900 people at $125 a ticket. In February he had an audience in the millions as the halftime entertainment for the Super Bowl. He has gone on to play well-publicized shows at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood for a few hundred people paying $3,121 per couple, and another elite show last weekend in East Hampton for about $3,000 per person.

Meanwhile Verizon put Prince in commercials that use “Guitar,” another song from “Planet Earth,” as bait for its V Cast Song ID service, making the song a free download to certain cellphones. On July 7 Prince introduced a perfume, 3121, by performing at Macy’s in Minneapolis.

In Britain he infuriated retailers by agreeing to have a newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, include the complete “Planet Earth” CD in copies on July 15. (The album is due for American release this Tuesday.) Presumably The Mail paid him something in the range of what he could have earned, much more slowly, through album sales. British fans have remunerated him in other ways. On Aug. 1 he starts a string of no fewer than 21 sold-out arena concerts, 20,000 seats each, at the O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome) in London at the relatively low ticket price of £31.21, about $64. The O2 ticket price also includes a copy of the album; Prince did the same thing with his tour for “Musicology” in 2004. Those “Musicology” albums were counted toward the pop charts, which then changed their rules; the “Planet Earth” albums will not be. But fans will have the record.

Prince’s priorities are obvious. The main one is getting his music to an audience, whether it’s purchased or not. “Prince’s only aim is to get music direct to those that want to hear it,” his spokesman said when announcing that The Mail would include the CD. (After the newspaper giveaway was announced, Columbia Records’ corporate parent, Sony Music, chose not to release “Planet Earth” for retail sale in Britain.) Other musicians may think that their best chance at a livelihood is locking away their music — impossible as that is in the digital era — and demanding that fans buy everything they want to hear. But Prince is confident that his listeners will support him, if not through CD sales then at shows or through other deals.

This is how most pop stars operate now: as brand-name corporations taking in revenue streams from publishing, touring, merchandising, advertising, ringtones, fashion, satellite radio gigs or whatever else their advisers can come up with. Rare indeed are holdouts like Bruce Springsteen who simply perform and record. The usual rationale is that hearing a U2 song in an iPod commercial or seeing Shakira’s face on a cellphone billboard will get listeners interested in the albums that these artists release every few years after much painstaking effort.

But Prince is different. His way of working has nothing to do with scarcity. In the studio — he has his own recording complex, Paisley Park near Minneapolis — he is a torrent of new songs, while older, unreleased ones fill the archive he calls the Vault. Prince apparently has to hold himself back to release only one album a year. He’s equally indefatigable in concert. On the road he regularly follows full-tilt shows — singing, playing, dancing, sweating — with jam sessions that stretch into the night. It doesn’t hurt that at 49 he can still act like a sex symbol and that his stage shows are unpredictable.

Through it all he still aims for hit singles. Although he has delved into all sorts of music, his favorite form is clearly the four-minute pop tune full of hooks. But his career choices don’t revolve around squeezing the maximum return out of a few precious songs. They’re about letting the music flow.

Prince gravitated early to the Internet. Even in the days of dial-up he sought to make his music available online, first as a way of ordering albums and then through digital distribution. (He was also ahead of his time with another form of communication: text messaging abbreviations, having long ago traded “you” for “U.”) Where the Internet truism is that information wants to be free, Prince’s corollary is that music wants to be heard.

How much he makes from his various efforts is a closely guarded secret. But he’s not dependent on royalties trickling in from retail album sales after being filtered through major-label accounting procedures. Instead someone — a sponsor, a newspaper, a promoter — pays him upfront, making disc sales less important. Which is not to say that he’s doing badly on that front: “3121” sold about 520,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and “Musicology,” with its concert giveaways, was certified multiplatinum.

Prince ended a two-decade contract with Warner Brothers Records in 1996 after a very public falling out with the label. During the mid-1990s he appeared with the word “Slave” painted on his face and said the label was holding back material he wanted to release. For a while he dropped the name Prince — which was under contract to Warner Brothers and Warner/Chappell Music — for an unpronounceable glyph; when the contracts ran out, he was Prince again. And since leaving Warner Brothers he has been independent. He owns his recordings himself, beginning with a three-CD set called “Emancipation” from 1996. He has released albums on his own NPG label and Web site or has licensed them, one by one, for distribution by major labels, presumably letting them compete for each title. Over the past decade he has had albums released through EMI, Arista, Universal and Sony.

The idea behind long-term recording contracts is that a label will invest in building a career. But Prince (in part because of Warner Brothers’ promotion) has been a full-fledged star since the ’80s. So now a label’s main job for him is to get the CDs into stores.

Prince also experimented with having fans subscribe directly to receive his music online, which turned out to be a better idea in theory than in execution. After five years he quietly shut down his NPG Music Club in 2006. Still, his Web site (which is now 3121.com) usually has a rare recording or two for streaming or downloading. Why not? There’s plenty more.

“Planet Earth” is a good but not great Prince album. Unlike “3121,” which built many of its tracks around zinging, programmed electronic sounds, “Planet Earth” sounds largely handmade, even retro. “In this digital age you could just page me,” Prince sings in “Somewhere Here on Earth,” a slow-motion falsetto ballad. “I know it’s the rage but it just don’t engage me like a face-to-face.”

Prince, as usual, is a one-man studio band — drums, keyboards, guitars, vocals — joined here and there by a horn section or a cooing female voice. This time he leans toward rock rather than funk. Serious songs begin and end the album. It starts with “Planet Earth,” an earnest environmental piano anthem with an orchestral buildup, and winds up with the devout “Lion of Judah” and with “Resolution,” an antiwar song. In between, Prince flirts a lot, playing hard-to-get as he rocks through “Guitar” (“I love you baby, but not like I love my guitar”) and promising sensual delights in the upbeat “One U Wanna C” and the slow-grinding “Mr. Goodnight.” There’s also a catchy, nutty song about a model, “Chelsea Rodgers,” who’s both hard-partying and erudite; Prince sings that she knows about how “Rome was chillin’ in Carthage in 33 B.C.E.”

Although Columbia probably thinks otherwise, how the album fares commercially is almost incidental. With or without the CD business, Prince gets to keep making music: in arenas, in clubs, in the studio. Fans buy concert tickets, companies rent his panache, pleasure is shared. It’s a party that can go on a long time.

Brilliant anthemic rock - and Prince is back on his guitar! The fans have been waiting for this for 20 years. This is a real mix- it's got the funky bass, cheesy-in-a-good-way keyboards, and that screaming Purple Rain guitar.

2. GUITAR

Sounds like he's been listening to the Killers. He's normally a rhythm guitarist but this is driving lead guitar. Listen to the melody: it's so instant. That's his skill. Nice and simple like AlphabetStreet. This is Prince at his best.

3. SOMEWHERE HERE ON EARTH

Slow, sensual jazz - sexy Prince. I prefer it when he does it in a jazzy way rather than R&B, and this is a great example of that. This album's shaping up to be his most commercial since PurpleRain.

4. THE ONE U WANNA C

You can see this being a big hit. It's got a country-ish, Midwest sound you don'tassociate with him.Itreminds me of I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Manon Sign'O'The Times, which became one of his best-loved songs.

5. FUTURE BABY MAMA

Classic R&£038; B. A poor quality version of this was leaked on a website ahead of the CD so I've already heard this. It's very much Prince talking to his female fans: it's got that talky bit in the middle, like Barry White. When he does that live, the women start screaming.

6.MR GOOD NIGHT

Feel-good,semi-rapped soul.He sounds at peace with what he is: a 49-year-old man talking to his lover. He tried rap in the Nineties but it didn't work. But this is honest.

7. ALL THE MIDNIGHTS IN THE WORLD

A pianoled ray of sunshine, with Magic Numbers-style West Coast harmonies. He's talking about God and love in an earnest, positive way. Great piano. It's another Prince song that has an older man's sense of experience, and I like that.

8. CHELSEA RODGERS

Three words - ecstatic disco funk. Wow, I love this, it shows the Scissor Sisters who had the funk first. This is the sound of his earliest albums when he was influenced by Stevie Wonder and Chic. Listen to that bass and brass! This is going to be excellent live.

9. LION OF JUDAH

I'm a Prince air-guitar-head and this sad, guitar-driven anthem is great. The opening chords sound just like the start of Purple Rain. It's got that thick tone he hasn't used since the mid-Eighties.He's a meticulous composer and arranger, and his muso side is obvious here.

10. RESOLUTION

Happy psychedelic pop - that hippy, Seventies sound is big on this album. It shows you've got a bit of everything. He's back to the top of his form in every field.

Club GOSSIP is a once a month 80s new wave video party every first Saturday of the month. It is the only club in the Bay Area that you can dance along with/to your favorite 80s videos. One room is devoted entirely to videos that accompany the 80s hits as you used to see them on MTV a long long time ago. With two huge video screens and an inexhaustible and totally awesome library of the authentic 80's videos, Club Gossip is quickly becoming one of the more prominent parties.

Each month is dedicated to a memorable 80s figure or party theme of some sort. Examples of past tributes are Madonna, Smiths/Morrissey, Prince, Soft Cell and George Michael, with a future tribute to Ian Curtis and Joy Division in the month of May. When featuring an artist, they play more than the usual amount of songs by that artist, but do not bore the whole party with nothing but the featured artist. A Video Montage courtesy of Channel One Video adds to the ambiance of the theme in the front room.

Club Gossip was started by Randy (of Rocket) and Damon (of Bondage-a-Go-Go and 1984). They wanted to create a party that did something new and fun that everyone could enjoy. They strive every month to provide their clientele with a wide range of rotating guest star DJ's, like– Gina Shock (of the Go-Go's), Low Life (New Wave City), Nako (Popscene and Shutter), and Omar (Leisure and Shutter) so the playlist never gets stale or tired. The resident DJ's, Damon, Melting Girl (Death Guild and 1984), and Shon (Rocket) play their favorite 80's New Wave music in a unpretentious manor all the while keeping the dancefloor plenty busy.

The Cat Club hosts this party every first Saturday of the month. There are two rooms of dancing, two full bars, and a smoking area. In addition, there are monthly drink specials. The “clientele” ranges from gay, straight, bi, and tranny. The party is not geared to anyone specific, just for everyone to enjoy. The rooms fill up fairly quickly, we think being free before 10pm has something to do with that, yet the crowd is so congenial that you can easily maneuver through the crowd, people are pretty kind and respectful at Club GOSSIP.

The March 4 Club GOSSIP, the General Manager of Cat Club, Randy, will be celebrating 2nd 30th birthday. Full disclosure, he like to get crazy on his birthday, so watch out.

Saturday March 4th Club Gossip presents: ICONS

Tribute 2:
Erasure/Bronski Beat/Morrissey /Queen/Judas Priest/

http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/arts/music/pop/reviews/n_0206/

A New Reign
========
Prince has been disappointing for a decade. But just when expectations could hardly scrape any lower, he has made a great record.

By Ethan Brown

Pure Prince: On his new record, the Purple One does not digress.
Prince is pop’s great polymath, but for too long he’s allowed his more expansive instincts to nearly swallow him whole. Prince’s fans, naturally, have stayed with him, eagerly downloading his online-only projects and snapping up his second-rate output, while everyone else has grown impatient with records that, since the underrated dark funk of 1994’s Come, have been too experimental, too packed with ideas, or simply too long. Even individual songs choked on their own ambition: “Joint 2 Joint,” from 1996’s Emancipation, was a nearly eight-minute-long muddle of hip-hop breaks, P-Funk-style harmonies, and a recording of Prince eating Cap’n Crunch. His 1999 boxed set, Crystal Ball, was so amateurishly put together that it made the Talking Heads’ recent, overblown retrospective seem essential. Prince’s tours, meanwhile, have been built around unsatisfying medleys of his eighties hits that have come to sound dated and almost Vegas-y.

All of which makes the sudden surge of good feeling for Prince—an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the sold-out shows at the Garden in July—a little strange. His past is certainly worth celebrating, but is there anything about Prince’s current work that warrants attention?

For the first time in a decade, that question can be answered in the affirmative, thanks to Musicology, his latest album and his first on a major label since 1999. Despite its off-putting title, which promises the sort of pedagogical funk that Prince has been schoolmarmishly peddling with Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham over the past few years, Musicology is a thrilling, electric statement by an artist who just might be building toward another creative peak.

“Prince returns to what he’s so masterfully good at: songcraft and groove.”

His digressive impulses held in check, Prince returns to what he’s so masterfully good at: songcraft and groove. Both the title track and “Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance” riff on the mechanized funk of early-seventies James Brown, but with some radical left turns: skeletal guitars, spooked-out synths, and even a sample of his own hits. “Illusion,” in particular, is wonderfully weird: Prince sings in an off-kilter, nasal screech that reminds us of the vocal risks he used to take, like when he assumed the feminine voice (which he dubbed “Camille”) on “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” from his double-album masterpiece, 1987’s Sign ‘O’ the Times.

But it’s the ballads and love songs that make Musicology matter. On recent albums, Prince’s slower tunes were either covers (Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” the Stylistics’ “Betcha By Golly Wow”) or torrents of overemotiveness (“The Greatest Romance Ever Sold”). But like his earliest material—such as the honest, direct “When You Were Mine”—the sentiments on Musicology are simple and much more powerful. Listeners can feel the romantic longing of “If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life” and “A Million Days”; Prince, for the first time in a long time, isn’t overdoing it with pointless and obtuse metaphors. And the music behind it—all hard-charging piano and soaring guitars—is as inspired as his lyrical ideas.

Musicology is a brave departure for an artist who has rested comfortably on nostalgia for albums (Purple Rain in particular) he knows weren’t as great as some of his fans remember, while often trying to present himself as a helpless victim of the record industry (he used to describe himself as a slave).

Musicology’s strength should have implications far beyond the record stores: It should give Prince the confidence to avoid the shameless audience-pleasing rituals he often practices on tour (the nadir came at Madison Square Garden a few years back, when, instead of engaging in the joyous call-and-response he’s famous for, he repeatedly asked the audience if it loved him) and to delve deep into unexplored songs like “Ballad of Dorothy Parker” that offer far greater interpretive space than his standards. Perhaps the surprisingly great Musicology will at last allow Prince to free himself, not from music-industry subservience but from a museum-like reverence for funk and soul and a back catalogue of hits that dog him like overeager fans.

http://encycl.opentopia.com/term/Cat_Glover

Cat released the "Catwoman" single in 1989, after she left Prince's employ following the Japanese leg of the Lovesexy tour. "We left on pretty good terms," Cat said at the time. "He wanted me to hang around, though. He really did. I had a whole lotta decisions to make after Lovesexy, so I left."

Cat turned down Prince's offer to work on the album with her, chosing instead to go to England to work with Tim Simenon of Bomb The Bass fame. The planned album, entitled I Am Energy, never materialized, probably because the "Catwoman" single was by all accounts a failure. Interestingly, one of the tracks intended for the album was called "December 1st 1987," which was written about Prince's decision not to release the Black Album. "I was there for all that stuff, when it was made, when it didn't come out. I won't ever forget the time," Cat said in 1989.

According to interviews Cat gave in 1989, Prince did offer her at least four tracks for the aborted album, "9 Lives" (after the first version of The Time's reunion album, Corporate World, had been scrapped), "Cat Attack," "Cat And Mouse," and "A Man Called Jesus." Of these, only "A Man Called Jesus" has since been released as it was included on Mavis Staples The Undertaker album.
Prince's Protegè Marva King Releases New Album

Born in Flint, Michigan, Marva King is most known for her starring stage role in Tyler Perry's multi-million dollar grossing faith-based DVD, "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman." In "Diary," King played the spurned, attractive, feisty and vengeful housewife, Helen. Twentieth Century Fox and Lions Gate Entertainment have licensed the DVD rights to this hot property. Now, however, the former Prince and the New Power Generation singer is back again, currently in the studio, recording her very own album.

Despite the massive success of her stage debut, King, however, has far more to her stellar resume than just her diary. Performing since the age of four, King started her career very early on, and became accomplished at quite a young age. She is heard on albums by Tupac Shakur, Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Cliff, Chaka Khan, Lionel Richie and Phil Collins, just to name a few. She co-wrote the Whispers' single, "Innocent," which debuted at #4 on the "Billboard" Hot Singles Chart. She has performed with artists like Lenny Kravitz, and has toured with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Prince.

Holed up in the studio, the prolific vocalist with the four-octave range is currently recording her upcoming neo-soul and R&B CD, "Soul Sistah," for which she has already completed several songs. Fans will certainly relish its new offerings, which include a wide variety of musical samplings. King has received "Universal Love" from audiences around the world, and surely gives it back in her track of the same name. Other tantalizing numbers on her long awaited album include, "Sensuous Man," Big Ups" and "Trippin'." One of her personal favorites is "Sistah," featuring violinist Karen Briggs (Yani). Listeners will be thrilled by tracks that include "Yo Attitude" and "The Flesh." One of the highlights of the album is a revamped version of Minnie Ripperton's "Baby This Love," featuring George Duke on keyboards. King, who also co-composed all of its other tracks, is producing the album.

Marva is beyond any stereotype or genre. Larger than such a limitation, her recordings include music that is hip hop, gospel, jazz, R&B, funk, reggae and rock. Her mesmerizing delivery inspired Larry Flick to write in "Billboard Magazine," "Marva King is a supreme Diva, and her name will go down in history as one of the best."

There are many special moments that could fill countless, riveting chapters of her diary. This is one of them: King met Prince when she performed at a birthday party for Stevie Wonder. The Artist secured her phone number, and two days later, he had her to fly her to audition for him. Prince soon took her on the road, under his wing, and made her a member of his group, New Power Generation (NPG). She performed on most of the songs on his "New Power Soul" album, and demonstrated her immense talent, as well, when she played with Prince live, on stage performances that included their still memorable remakes of Shania Twain's "Still The One" and Joan Osbourne's "What If God Was One Of Us?"

Says King of being hired by Prince, "At Stevie's (Wonder) party, after I performed, a guy came up to me and said, "My boss wants to speak to you." I said, "Who is your boss?" and he answered, "The Artist." I looked at him and asked, "Well, what artist?" He just responded, "The Artist." Such was the mysterious beginning of their working relationship together for King, when Prince chose her to be a member of his group, NPG. King, who had been working with K.D. Lang, would soon fly off to Minneapolis to start working with the fabled Prince.

"I worked with him for two years," King explains, adding, "It was intense. I have never worked that hard in my life. I was tired, but it was so much fun." She reflects, "I left because it was time for me to go. We were in Europe, and I developed bronchitis. We did a lot of shows in Europe and in the States. I was exhausted for two years straight."

"I learned a lot about performing and business from Prince," she notes. "I was a rather reserved performer on stage before, because I came from gospel and R&B roots. He broke all that up, all the chains and barriers. That's when I turned into a performer," she reveals. King still refers to that episode in her life as "major school."

King recalls, "When it was time for me to leave, Prince revealed to me he had a vision it was going to happen. He said, "I already know you're going to leave me. You have many angels around you, so I won't try to stop you." Thus, he gave me his blessing."

The angels are still watching over her. She continued to attract new fans that watched her in the stage production of "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman." Marva points out, "People never filmed these stage performances and sold them before. Now, everybody is following suit. This was really one of the first black stage productions that just went out on DVD and blew up." A staggering fact, "Blackflix Magazine" has quoted film critic Roger Ebert, as saying, "I have received more emails about that than any other review I have ever written, outnumbering "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Passion Of The Christ" put together. And they were not the same message. Each came from an individual who felt moved to write."

Marva, who is also heard on Michael Jackson's "Bad" album, states of the iconic pop star, "I used to travel with him a lot, although I did not do the tours. I just hung out with him and his family a lot; I know all of them very well." She remembers, "The first really big recording I ever did with anybody for a major label was "Let's Get Serious with Jermaine Jackson, and that was in the early '80's."

Stevie Wonder hired her as a teenager. Marva comments, "He told me, I just have a feeling you're not supposed to be in the background, you're supposed to be a solo artist. At the time, I was very happy to be in the background, I sung in church choirs all my life. I toured with him, did a live album with that was recorded live in Osaka and Tel Aviv, which is his double album, "Natural Wonder," featuring the song, "Master Blaster."

Lionel Richie has also worked with Marva, who contributed to his "Dancing On The Ceiling" album, which features guests like Eric Clapton and Alabama. It featured her voice on its tracks that include the chartbusting hit single, "Love Will Conquer All." She also warbles on his platinum selling album, "Louder Than Words," which featured her voice on songs like "Piece of Love," which she also wrote. "Louder" had a star-studded cast that also included Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Babyface and Peter Gabriel.

King confesses, "I've done so many sessions, it is hard for me to remember them all, as enjoyable as they were."

Among the countless albums she graces, King's voice is also heard on Paula Abdul's "My Love For You Is Real" album, Yolanda Adams' "Mountain High, Valley Low" album, the "Gap Band III" album and Jeffrey Osbourne's Grammy nominated album, "That's For Sure." She was also featured on Will Downing's duet, "I Can't Make You Love Me," a remake of the Bonnie Raitt track. Randy Jackson gave her first production job, producing tracks for Philip Bailey.

In the upcoming 2005 film release of "Resurrection: The J.R. Richard Story," King plays the feature role of Richard's confidante, sportscaster Cindy Young.
She will also be heard on three tracks on the "Soul Of Brazil" compilation album, including its first single, slated for release this summer on You Records, headed by Clarence Smith, founder of "Essence Magazine."

Quite the smoldering report. Wish it'd been me....
_____________________

From the NPG Music Club:

My headlights beam back a purple blaze of two symbols adorned upon the
black gates. This is the way to 3121. Up the long driveway to a royal
white mansion. A valet graciously opens my door. I had not attended the
Oscars but suddenly felt like a star transformed on the 10 feet of
purple carpet that went up the stairs towards his 20 foot tall glass doors.

This is the story of two solid nites that felt like one huge
experimental historic jam. If I had the nerve to talk to Prince, I would -- just
to ask what kind of vitamins he takes to throw a party, jam until 6 am.
Get up, go to the Oscars, jam until 7 am.

Normally, I would name drop every celebrity there; but I prefer to
conjure up the moment (right before Pam Anderson spilled her drink on me)
that left me energized and exhausted, exhilarated and delirious. A
witnessing of raw passion of unequivocal talent that tasted so sweet, so
dang good, it was THE moment captured at '3121.' And it had nothing to do
with Oscar host, Chris Rock trading political commentary with Spike Lee
nor good-looking couple Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe hobnobbing
with Clive Owen and Chris Tucker.

A perfectly synchronized Asian vibe complemented the mood. Food --
delectable. At 3 a.m. the house band walked in. Behind them, lavender
lights punctuated by a beautifully lit, now infamous symbol floating above
the steamy pool set the tone. (The backyard can be viewed by the
"invisible" glass wall -- providing an amazing backdrop for what was to come.)

The band started to jam. Lead vocalist, Ashley, belted out some
classics while Frank's keys began to percolate. Halfway through the set -- a
flash of gold to my left caught my eye. I paid no mind, thinking it was
just Christina Aguliera's hair or perhaps Maroon 5's collective beaming
faces. Didn't matter... I was getting into a comfortable 2-step when
the earth shifted. The energy changed. Everyone around me leaned in. The
music got FONKIER. I looked around ... the chef, the waitresses, the
ENTIRE STAFF all stopped working and straight up started GROOVING! I
thought I was in a reproduction of "CARWASH"!

I knew Jeff Gordon was in the house, but he was walking, not driving. I
stepped up a few feet and saw the housequake in the flesh crack the
floor in two! PRINCE was SIMULTANEOUSLY playing keyboards and guitar in
the middle of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish." My mouth fell open and my drink
nearly fell out of my hand into Cedric the Entertainer's lap. I saw
folks run and grab their people in order to witness the incredible sight.

The man was on FI-YAH! The windows were smoldering. Regina King's gold
lame dress was curling up. It was so hot in there the devil was 'fraid
to set foot. Cora, the drummer -- broke it down so hard, she popped the
skins back on the little piggy's belly it came from.

Prince in his beautiful gold mandarin collared outfit was having such a
blast, I elbowed Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz out of the way for a
closer look. I'm no stalker but after his searing guitar solo in "Whole
Lotta Love", adding a lethal cocktail of funk to "Rock Steady",
reinventing Michael J's "Don't Stop till You get Enough" -- well, I had to stare
because no less than two feet in front of me was a Rock Star causing an
eclipse in his own living room.

Suddenly in the middle of dancing and playing he flipped us a
synchopated groove that I can only compare to... well.. to nothing I've ever
heard before: "Thru the gates.. Leave Ur clothes on the floor... Take Ur
pick from the Japanese robes and sandals... Don't you wanna come...
3121... Gonna b so much fun... 3121... U can come if U want 2, but U can
never leave...". I thought an anthropologist was gonna investigate it was
so off the missing-link chain!!!

Even reclusive Joni Mitchell couldn't resist shaking her thang while
Rachelle Ferrell added a vocal flair that extended the jam into a 24"
single. Black Eyed Peas cut in to wrap it up, but they just unraveled it
more and allowed Prince to string us along.

When I finally peeled myself from the moment, I scanned the room and
saw the look of amazement on every face. Jaded celebrities looked like
giddy little girls getting their first Barbie. And I don't mean Pam.

I was surprised I lived to see past the dawn.

3121. I have a feeling it's just begun.

Are you all ready for ROUND 2?

The 411...
I have gotten us a place for Prince Fans to meet up monthly. Superfunkycalifragisushi will be on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the O2 Sushi & Sake lounge in San Francisco. I'll be playing nothing but Prince and related artist music. Like last time, we will have Princly Videos for your visual pleasure (working on getting some new ones). It's part resturant/part bar...like all of the bars in that area. We will be clearing out the tables at 11 so you all can dance and what not. Sushi is good and the bar has Sake Drinks, Beer and Wine.

I'll be spinning the entire night (5hrs) and will be taking requests . (I'll probably be breaking at some point to hang with you guys too). I promise to have 17 Days (last time I was scrambling and didn't bring it)

Hope to see you guys there! Last time was loads of fun.

The Details:
Where: O2 Sushi & Sake Lounge - 795 Valencia, SF, CA
When: Feb 19
Time: 9 - 2am (9 - 11 will be more pop stuff and mellower joints...11 starts the dance jams...though due to the crowd last time, expect a little bump before 11)
And...It Free to get in.

p.s. This is a smaller place and not necessa a club, but it is cool and a place to meet and hear great Prince music.

Hey everyone!

I have gotten us a place for Prince Fans to meet up monthly. Superfunkycalifragisushi will be on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the O2 Sushi & Sake lounge in San Francisco. I have it secured for at least the first 3 months of '05. I'll be playing nothing but Prince and related artist music. We plan on having special Prince Rolls added as the specails of the evening. I hope to have Princly Visuals too.

Hope to see you guys there! Woo Hoo a monthly night to get our P on! No more last minute emails for a meet up

The Details:
Where: O2 Sushi & Sake Lounge - 795 Valencia, SF, CA
When: Jan 15
Time: 9 - 2am (9 - 11 will be more pop stuff and mellower joints...11 starts the dance jams )

p.s. This is a smaller place and not necessa a club, but it is cool and a place to meet and hear great Prince music. This will allow me to also work on larger parties like the one in Sept.

You should be the first to know that tickets are now on sale for the encore performance of SING-ALONG PURPLE RAIN at Midnight Mass on November 6th. Back because you demanded it!

Warner Bros has given Midnight Mass the exclusive on booking the PURPLE RAIN film print. It's otherwise unavailable to theatres nation-wide. Yes, we're special. The print is gorgeous and the sound is amazing. Imagine over 400 people singing along and dancing in the aisles, wearing their favorite 80's Prince inspired ensembles! It's magical. We haven't decided yet about booking a second night and tickets are already moving.

The screenings in July enjoyed sell-out crowds and an instant classic was born.

I had on the 1st album on repeat at work and I had to pause as to how much I miss them and how much I love their music seperate from Prince. I am ok with a revoulion reunion...but I would love Prince to have these gals on an album again.

I think my favorite of theirs is the First one..although practically all of the songs are about the breakup...which to me is a bit...well not amazing...but to have a reocurring theme like that throughout the album and have all the songs take on their own specialness is sort of an achievement. They did a good turn on the entire album; musically and lyrically.

It took me many years to actually like them. I mean I'd listen for listening sake, but really get into it...nor get it. One stand out "The Life" is probably one of my very favorite songs of all time. Every word. I remember shortly after moving here to San Fran. It was SO overwhelming. New place...new job...new friends...losing old friends etc. I heard this and just cried. I musta played that song like 20 times or something. It was more of a releasing cry. Just thinking about all I had come thru, all I was trying to do...the stress etc. The song has incredible impact. I still play it every now and again to remind myself...to ground myself to what I am doing, and where I am going. It gives me gravity.

I try and get into almost everything they do. Seal...Neil Finn etc. Their harmonization and the touches they give to these other artists songs is always quality. Usually they are on the standouts of most albums they help make. They have a sound, you know.

Anyway...they are one of the last few I have yet to see live. Oneday...

I just caught the first night of the Philly stop in Prince's Musicology tour.

Prince put on a great one. The set list was mostly hits (he even said “so many hits, so little time”) with only two tracks from "Musicology" but the hits were not the straight-off-the-album versions. They were all done with a fresh sound. It went all the way back to “I Wanna Be Your Lover” (I think this was on “Prince” – his second album). He did an acoustic set where he covered a bunch of great stuff and with the band did a cover of Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” His guitar and the drummer’s solos gave Page and Bonham (RIP) a run for their money.

At one point during his acoustic set he started into and Elvis song (It was either “Jail House Rock” or “Hound Dog”, I forget now) and stopped about six bars in. He said “you’ve gotta be Prince before you can be king.” The crowd went nuts and he moved on to the next song. He had a great vide with the crowd, which was on of the most diverse in terms of age and ethnicity that I've evern seen.

I've been in the Wachovia Center (the concert venue) several times for various sporting events, but I've never heard a crowd this loud, especially trying to get him our for his Pruple Rain encore. My ears were ringing from just the crowd noise.

If Prince is in your town, you gatta go.

But to have a nice crisp, clean, pristine copy of "Under the Cherry Moon" is making me happier than a clam. Such an underrated gem, in my somewhat predjudiced opinion. Despite the fact that it swep the Razzies that year, I find the whole thing charming. The photography, the costumes, the music, and Jerome Benton in all of his glory. Sure, it's a bit implausable and the overwrought death scene is really a bit much, I love the whole messy thing. How sweet to go into this black and white world where race isn't an issue and love will conquer if you just believe.
